Combat the Struggles of Aging Windows

Remember when your windows were brand new? The smooth glide of the window on the tracks, the easy open features, and the crystal clear view?

Windows age, as everything does. But we have some quick solutions to help you make it a little longer between maintenance services. Read on to tackle the top three issues.

Problem 1: Stuck Sliding Windows
A little silicone spray lubricant (sold at hardware stores) will grease those sticky tracks. Spray it onto a rag, and wipe along the tracks. Whether they’re metal, wood, or plastic, this quick fix will see you through.

Problem 2: Surface Scratches
Whether acquired from rustling tree limbs or toddler toys, window scratches can impede your view and collect unsightly sediment.  This treatment only works if the scratch is not detectable if you run your fingernail over it.

To repair surface scratches, clean the area thoroughly to remove existing sediment and dirt. Then use a specially designed glass-polishing compound with cerium oxide sold at a local hardware store or discount store.

Apply the compound to the scratched surface and polish the area with a soft cloth. Use a light pressure to really polish the surface scratch. This will remove scuffs, light scratches and ground-in dirt. Then wipe away excess compound with a soft cloth.

Problem 3: Stiff and Sticky Window Latch
All of us have experienced sticky window latches. They can be a real pain. To counteract this issue Spray a little WD-40 onto the hinges, moving the latch back and forth to work in the lubricant. Or try rubbing the latch with petroleum jelly.

If you have all these issues and it has been a while since your last maintenance service, call your local service provider and schedule an appointment.

If you have a great window tip, sound off in the comments below! We would love to hear from you.
